Is the Video Game-to-Movie “Curse” Finally Ending?

Historically, Hollywood hasn’t been very kind to the video game industry. Game-to-movie adaptations have gained a notorious reputation over the years for being… well, not good. The challenge, I think, comes with the limitations of the medium itself; video games by nature are deeply interactive and driven by rich, ever-changing storylines that threaten to fall flat when mapped onto the big screen. It’s a curse that’s widely believed to have started with 1993’s “Super Mario Bros.”, a live-action box office bomb and the bane of Nintendo’s otherwise polished existence. Still, even curses can be broken, and I think that recent game movie releases such as “Detective Pikachu” (2018) and “Sonic the Hedgehog” (2019) is proof that we’re finally starting to see the effects of this unfortunate affliction wear off–at least, I’d hope.
