This summer Jackon, Mississippi faced a water crisis when tens of thousands of mostly black households had no access to safe drinking water. In August, Jackson’s main water treatment plant was damaged after a storm caused flooding. For three weeks, the residents had absolutely no running water. Once the water was turned back on, viral videos showed that their newly running tap water was a deep brown. In response, the city issued a boil water order, public schools were closed, and for the lucky few whose showers and toilets still worked, the city advised that residents shower with “their mouths closed.”
Black Mississippi Teenager Killed by Police; Relatives Have Questions
In Mississippi, a black teenager was shot in the head by Gulfport police outside of a discount store. He was taken off of life support days later, leaving his family with questions about the officers’ actions. At the young age of 15, Jaheim McMillan was shot on Thursday. Brian Switzer, the Harrison county coroner, confirmed to the Sun Herald that the Gulfport High School freshman died on Saturday after he was taken off of life support at USA University Hospital in Mobile, Alabama.

On Thursday, The State of Mississippi filed a brief, explicitly requesting that the The Supreme Court overturn Roe v. Wade. The state is currently defending its 2018 abortion laws, which ban abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy. The state wants for the Supreme Court to uphold their restrictive abortion laws in an upcoming case. The laws are being challenged by the Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the only organization in the state that provides access to legal abortions.
