On Thursday California lawmakers passed a bill to protect abortion providers as well as patients from civil suits and penalties in other states. The next step for what lawmakers are calling Assembly Bill 1666 is to have Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom, who supports abortion rights, sign the bill. It would take effect immediately with his signature.

President Joe Biden insists that he strongly believes in the rights spelled out in the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision that are currently under the most dire threat in decades. Despite his claims, Biden barely even uses the word “abortion,” and when his administration has been asked about what it can do to protect reproductive rights, the response has mostly been that Congress must write the landmark court decision into law, a strategy that is likely to fail.
