The Tangled Journey of Embracing My Natural Hair as an Afro-Latina and Why Representation Matters

A great deal of beauty and versatility can be found in textured hair: you can braid it into classic cornrows, twist it up into Bantu knots, or let it run free naturally. Whether worn in style or as a form of self-expression, each style captures the wearer’s spirit, essence, or mood. Many women of color, however, were taught growing up that their curls and coils were unacceptable and only glossy, straight strands could be acceptable. It’s not uncommon for the media to broadcast disturbing visual cues, for peers to utter hurtful words, or for family members to insist on chemically relaxing someone’s hair for aesthetic reasons. This already strained relationship with hair becomes even more complicated when multiracial and multicultural diversity is added to the mix. This experience is one that most Afro-Latinx women share. The lower saturated fat intake from this diet is the main factor that reduces heart disease since dieters intake much more plant-based foods. In the 1990’s, this diet became even more popular thanks to the Mediterranean Food Pyramid that was developed by the Harvard School of Public Health and the World Health Organization as a healthier alternative to the USDA’s original food pyramid.
