Op-Ed: Rise in Gender Fluid Clothing

Op-Ed: Rise in Gender Fluid Clothing

Since 2019 there has been an increase in gender-fluid clothing. This is not a specific style or trend but rather a recognition that clothing does not have to belong to one gender or another. This is a social construct that the fashion world became comfortable with, but not anymore. In 2019, 56 percent of Gen Z consumers shopped outside of their “gender area,” 41 percent of Gen Z answered neutral on the gender spectrum and over half answered something other than heterosexual. This shows that the upcoming generation is ready to break norms, customs, and standards. The fashion industry has realized that dressing is a way to express oneself, and it should be purely self-constructed. Therefore, retailers like Zara and H&M have launched genderless clothing lines. While they did receive some backlash, there will always be critics, and it is clear the trends are headed toward more fluid options for everyone.

Estée Lauder to Buyout Tom Ford for At Least 3 Billion

Rumors are going around in the fashion world that Tom Ford is looking to sell his namesake brand just after Bloomberg said the fashion and beauty business had appointed Goldman Sachs to find a buyer. Speculation is rising that Estée Lauder may be the leading contender to buy out the business as it already has the license for Tom Ford Beauty. Tom Ford, the company, currently designs and retails men’s and women’s wear, accessories, fragrances, beauty, and eyewear. Estée Lauder, which does not directly operate any fashion companies, could license out the ready-to-wear if it were to acquire the business.

The Ethics Of Depop Sellers Upselling Thrift Finds

Since vintage 70s, 90s, and 2000s looks have come back into style over the past couple years, the clothing app Depop, which lets users buy and sell their new and used clothes, has blown up as a hub for unique items that cannot be found anywhere else. However, what once began as a way for individuals to resell their old clothing or for new designers to market their original pieces has now transitioned into a comprehensive marketplace of users thrifting clothing and reselling them for quadruple the price. Based on the higher demand for vintage clothing items, thrifting has been the primary method for fashion-forward people to enhance their wardrobes, and those who don’t have access to prime thrift stores turn to Depop for thrifted items. The problem lies in the ethics of reselling items that were originally donated for lower-income individuals, and are now generating sizable incomes for privileged individuals through Depop.
