Within the last few years, fashion and beauty have grown more daring and bold. Color, creativity, and an overall theme of self-expression have dominated fashion and beauty trends. Most recently, we have seen this demonstrated in the realm of cosmetics through trends like facial gems and embellishments, bold eyeliner artistry, and statement colors like green eyeshadows and metallic accents. But just as every fashion trend grows in popularity, a counter-trend begins to emerge; a counter-trend being a trend that blossoms as a rejection of the mainstream. So naturally, the reactionary trend towards the bold makeup looks that we’ve been seeing would take the form of more toned-down natural looks. The natural beauty trend revolves around the concept of enhancing what’s already there with minimal makeup and maximum skin care. Because of this trend’s emphasis on highlighting people’s natural beauty and improving their skin care, I fully support this trend and its moment.

Where Does Our Makeup Come From: the Origins of Our Favorite Products
Although men and women have been wearing makeup for centuries, the beauty industry today is a far cry from where it began. All across the world, people in ancient Egypt, Rome, and China used coal, beeswax, henna, almonds, lead, berries and copper in various ways as makeup. Today, however, makeup lovers have never been farther away from the origins of the products they love.
The makeup sold today is generally a mixture of water, oil, and wax. Along with certain chemicals which act as preservatives, emulsifiers, or are just added in for ease of application. The third ingredient necessary for the colorful shimmery eyeshadows, blushes, lipsticks, and lipglosses are minerals.
Signs That Your Makeup Products Have Gone Bad
Chances are that in your makeup drawer right now, there is no doubt at least one product that has been sitting there for at least 5 years that you still haven’t thrown out. For the higher price point of some luxury products, it makes sense that it’s harder to part with that $30 mascara after only a few months. While a lot of cosmetic items will most likely be fine to use after the expiration date, some can form bacteria more easily the longer you wait, possibly leading to infections on your skin or eyes.

Op-Ed: All Celebrity Cosmetic Brands Are Not Created Equal
There is no end to celebrity cosmetic brands. After celebrities like Rihanna and Kylie Jenner made their way into the cosmetic world and their brands, shortly after, became successes, it wasn’t too long until other celebrities followed in their footsteps. Almost every celebrity has tried to find their way into the very competitive and crowded beauty and cosmetic industry. Celebrities like Selena Gomez, Harry Styles, and even baseball player Alex Rodriguez have tried to launch their beauty brands in hopes that they will have success. However, although many of them did find success with dabbling in the cosmetic industry, many also failed tremendously, tanking their overall brand.

Having self-confidence comes from feeling good within and loving the skin you’re in. But having acne-prone skin, oily skin, dry skin, or even eczema can be a battle. It can affect how a person feels about themselves and their appearance. Growing up I struggled with acne, more so when I was a teenager. Even today […]
